Creative Uses of Non-Big Data
Start Date: 11/15/2017Start Time: 5:00 PM
End Date: 11/15/2017

Event Description:
The concept of “big data” has become very popular in the past few years, promising to uncover hidden social processes through the analysis of extremely large datasets aggregating seemingly mundane, everyday actions. In this talk, Dr. Craig Upright (Sociology) will offer a critique of the underlying assumptions and ultimate utility of big-data projects, and suggest that the lure of these datasets can seriously undermine basic scientific principles of social research. He will also point out the ways that non-big data have been analyzed to creatively explore social processes that went beyond the intention of the original researchers.

Craig Upright, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Winona State University, is a scholar of social movements, organizations, politics, and culture. Before earning his PhD from Princeton University, he spent more than a decade working in the restaurant industry, including four years as the owner of a small coffee shop in St. Paul that hosted underground punk bands in its basement every weekend. His research focuses on sustainability movements. He currently has a contract with the University of Minnesota Press for a book examining the role that 1970s Minnesota cooperative grocery stores played in developing the organic food market.
