Event Description:
The WSU Commission on Academic Freedom and Free Speech (CAFFS) invites the WSU campus community to attend one of two open forums next week on the topic of free speech and campus speakers.  Forums will be held in Haake Hall conference room 176B from 6 – 7 p.m. next Tuesday, April 17th, and from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18th.  Participants will be working with facilitators in small and large groups to explore shared campus values and address the following questions:

1. What should be the role of the university in promoting/protecting free speech?
2. How should the campus deal with difficult, challenging and controversial ideas and speakers?
3. MinnState Board policy states, “Students shall have the right to assemble, to select speakers, and to discuss issues of their choice.” What does this mean to you? What should it mean to our campus?
These forums are the first step in a longer-term project to create a campus value statement covering academic freedom and free speech issues.  If you plan to attend one of these forums, please RSVP by end of day Monday, April 16th to rrgilchrest@winona.edu or jchernega@winona.edu so that we can order refreshments for the sessions.  We look forward to engaging the campus in these important deliberations.  Thank you…members of the WSU Commission on Academic Freedom and Free Speech (CAFFS)
